Our Organic Earl Grey Tea is of the highest quality being grown in regions around Sri Lanka. Earl Grey Tea is black tea that has been blended the oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange, a very fragrant citrus fruit. Thi is what gives Earl Grey Tea its distinct citrus flavouring.

Earl Grey Tea is not a distinct tea in itself, but rather falls into the category of flavoured teas, and although it originated in England, it is traditionally the Chinese who began the trend of flavouring teas such as black, green or oolong.

An Interesting History:

It is believed that a Chinese Mandarin Tea Master first blended Earl Grey Tea as a gift for the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and 2nd Earl of Grey, Charles Grey. This was said to have occurred between 1830 and 1834. According to the Grey family, the Tea Master used the bergamot oil to offset the lime flavour coming from the family water well. The Earl’s wife, Lady Grey, loved the blend so much that she apparently refused to serve anything else to her visitors and eventually had the tea replicated by tea merchants in London.
