Rolled Barley

Rolled barley looks and feels similar to the more popular breakfast cereal rolled oats, only it appears darker in colour and has a deeper more nutty flavour. It is more commonly eaten as a porridge with its caramel like flavour and chewy consistency that is not unlike pasta.  As cereals go, rolled barley is a winner when it comes to nutrition. It is packed with fibre, low in fat, cholesterol free and contains many vitamins and minerals including niacin, thiamine, selenium, magnesium and zinc, as well as health promoting  antioxidants and phytochemicals.

Rolled barley is great as a porridge in combination with other grains such as buckwheat, quinoa, oats or rye. Try putting this combination together for your very own 5 grain power porridge. Rolled barley is also a fantastic addition for homemade breads or muffins.

Interesting facts about Barley:

Barley grain is known to be one of the worlds first crops domesticated for human consumption, and still today remains as one of the major cereal crops grown in the world (alongside oats, wheat and rice).
